BSA was once the largest - and most successful - motorcycle company in the world. The company, which had its roots in the manufacture of guns (BSA stands for 'Birmingham Small Arms') began manufacturing motorcycles in 1906 and its machines soon became popular for their quality and affordability. Many of the most famous 'Beezas' were powered by twin-cylinder engines, in both vee and parallel configurations, and these motorcycles are the subject of this book.
During the inter-war years BSA built a series of side-valve and overhead valve V-twins in 500, 750 and 1000cc sizes, which were acclaimed as both sidecar and solo machines. Then, after the Second World War and up to the early 1960s, BSA offered a family of vertical twins in 500cc (A7) and 650cc (A10) guises. These bikes, with either boltedup or entirely separate gearboxes, are today seen as some of the very best British bikes of their era, and their names bring back fond memories: Star Twin, Shooting Star, Golden Flash, Road Rocket, Super Rocket, and the magnificent Rocket Gold Star. This is the first book to deal exclusively with both the inter-war V-twins and the post-war A7/10 series of machines.
In BSA Pre-Unit Twins - The Complete Story leading motorcycle historian Mick Walker examines in great detail not only the design and development of each model, but also the bikes' strengths and weaknesses. Containing much informative material and illustrated with many photographs and period advertising material, this book is a must for all BSA enthusiasts.

Mick Walker's interest in motorcycling goes back to the early 1960s when he started racing while still in the Royal Air Force and had wins at most major circuits. He started his own business, Mick Walker Motorcycles, in 1969, importing Italian machines, and was a leading race sponsor during the 1970s, with his riders gaining numerous victories including the Manx Grand Prix and British Grand Prix.
Between 1983 and 1987 he was editor of Motorcycle Enthusiast and in 1985 his first book was published. He has now written nearly 100 titles.
Mick has also been a successful tuner, coach and team manager. His list of riders is highly impressive and includes men such as 2004 World Super Bike champion James Toseland
