ABOUT
Street Rodding Tips and Techniques is a compilation of technical advice from street rodding expert Frank Oddo. Culled from more than 30 years of writing tech columns for Street Rodder magazine, here are hundreds of useful tidbits to help you with any street rod project, whether it's already a show winner or a project just getting started. Here are just a few examples of the tips you'll find inside
- ENGINE SWAPS
- Many flathead enthusiasts prefer the mystique of the pre-1949 heads (59-AB). But they also like the service-friendly layout of the 1949-53 block (8BA). A mix-and-match is possible; two holes in the block must be tapped for an eight-inch socket head pipe plug. Next, a water hole in the leading edge of the driver's side cylinder head (third down from the top) must be tapped for a quarter-inch socket head pipe plug.
- SUSPENSION
- Always check shock-to-wheel and shock-to-chassis clearance over the full range of suspension travel. Beyond that, when the chassis sits at its normal ride height, the shock should be at its midpoint of travel. And, make certain the shock never reaches its extension
- ELECTRICAL
- If the wiring in your street rod was done before you acquired the car (or you did it, and you just can't remember) check the main charging wire that transmits current from the alternator to the battery. If it is only 12gauge, replace it with 8-gauge wire. The heavier wire easily handles up to 120 amps of current. You can still protect the charging circuit with a 12gauge "fusible link," a piece of wire that acts like a slow fuse. If there is a system malfunction, the fusible link blows first (and safely).
