About:
Written
for the keen private motorist who carries out his own tuning, no less
than for those who build and prepare sports and racing cars for
competition work, this book explains, in practical detail, how the
performance of any car can be substantially improved without detracting
from its reliability or pleasant handling. It shows how a certain
amount of time and labour knowledgeably expended on the engine can add
many miles an hour to a car’s maximum speed, and how still
greater improvements can be effected by the substitution of components such as
carburetters, pistons, camshafts and special cylinder heads, depending on how far an
owner is prepared to go in search of speed.
Covering
all types of power units from motorcycle-type engines as used in
small-capacity racing cars to four-, six- and eight-cylinder models,
the work goes thoroughly into all aspects of engine modification, including
porting, balancing, carburation, lubrication, ignition, induction and exhaust
systems, as well as gearing, supercharging,
testing and general roadworthiness. There is also
a useful directory of manufacturers and suppliers of all equipment needed, from complete
performance conversion sets to individual components.
The “secrets” of successful
tuning, the author points out, are in fact established and
well known to a select band of individuals.
Automobile
Engine Tuning, by assembling that knowledge and
translating it into practical instruction, enables a private owner to extend a
moderate acquaintance with the subject to a stage at which he can confidently undertake more
advanced techniques in his quest for
higher speeds and improved performance.
