It is with a great deal of pleasure that we introduce the companion volume to our 1200 and 1300 VOLKSWAGEN TECHNICAL MANUAL. This privately published manual covers the 1500 and 1600 Volkswagen in considerable detail in order that it can be used in the workshop. However, every effort has been made to present the subject matter in such a way that it will also benefit the average non-technical owner or enthusiast. This manual is the most technical available for the Volkswagen enthusiast and many pages are devoted to the repair and adjustment of the transmission and final drive, a subject that is. sadly neglected in the majority of so-called technical manuals on the VW. Servicing the VW calls for a considerable amount of specialized equipment which is used in all specialized service shops and this is especially true of the transmission and final drive assemblies. Although we realize that the average owner is not qualified or equipped to perform the more complicated servicing procedures as set out in this book, we are nevertheless convinced that a thorough perusal of the subject material in this book win give him a clearer insight into the design and the constructional features of his Volkswagen. That, after all is the purpose of this book. The author feels that he is well qualified to have written this book due to his long experience in repairing and servicing Volkswagen automobiles. He also visits the parent company in Wolfsburg at regular intervals to participate in new service courses and to acquaint himself first-hand experience
