The book has three main objectives : to introduce the student to the wide variety of materials available today; to demonstrate some of the important relationships existing between the structure of a material and its properties; and to consider some of the ways in which materials are shaped and formed into articles designed to increase the material wealth of our society. Of these three objectives the second, namely the relationships between structure and properties, is the central theme of the book.
Recognising the fact that materials science does present conceptual difficulties to beginning students, the text is supplemented by over 200 illustrations selected to highlight in visual form the main points made in the text. Understanding will also be aided by the 51 laboratory experiments and numerous review questions placed at the end of each chapter. Glossaries of terms met for the first time in the text are also placed at the end of each chapter.
