INTRODUCTION TO
"DRAG REDUCTION AND STRUCTURES HANDBOOK"
The "Drag Reduction and Structures handbook" (DR/SH) is actually a companion or follow-up piece to my earlier book, the "Sailplane Designer's Handbook" (SDH). The idea behind the SDH was to show anyone who wanted to know, how to designs the aerodynamics of a sailplane so they would have a ship of at least reasonable competitive performance with high stability for hands off flight. Based upon ~ years of reader feedback I think that objective has been adequately met. However, despite the broad range that the SDH tried to cover, much of the feedback indicated that most people still wanted more information on two subjects
(1) High performance airfoils for low drag
(2) Structural design information to avoid wing breakage
In putting this book together, both of these challenges were accepted. The DR/SH is in two parts - Drag Reduction Techniques and Structural Design (Wings). This is at least what was asked for and maybe a bit more. For example, where people had said they wanted better airfoils for lower drag, the Drag Reduction part covers not just airfoils but all forms of drag reduction, including "Vee" tails and even flying wings. This was done because the airplane itself could care less where the drag reduction comes from - the glide slope responds to any kind of drag reduction. In the instance of Structural Design, most of the major sailplane "disasters" I've witnessed (including my own) happened because the wing broke at the root To treat this subject, ~ tackled main spar and 1/16" balsa sheeting structural design and the zero forces that can bend a wing like a toothpick. To make your use of this information easier, it has been put together as a very simple step by step design proceedure with only the easiest of calculations.
