 ABOUT

Railways oi Australia
THE AUSTRALIAN RAILWAY SCENE is changing fast. We are seeing the transition from steam locomotives to diesels and electrics, the arrival of modern air-conditioned expresses, the gauge standardization of key routes. New lines are being built and old lines rebuilt to carry fabulous mineral wealth. Latest techniques have been mastered to handle traffic and attract business,
freight trains move at 60 m.p.h., and the push-button era is promised with Centralized Traffic Control.
Railways of Australia tells about these spectacular developments, and takes us behind the scenes to show how a railway works.
The Australian railways are a vast enterprise. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, they handle a staggering volume of passengers and freight.
Their story is told, in text and pictures, against a romantic back ground-the battle of the broken gauges, the classic beauty of some of the greatest steam power, the enormous capacity of the all-conquering diesel, the glamour of the titled trains, and the nostalgic appeal of the lesser known private lines.
Railways of Australia will delight everyone who likes trains-from the keenest enthusiast to those who just like hearing a whistle call on a frosty night. _

The Authors
C. C. SINGLETON, one of Australia’s best known railway enthusiasts, spent his working life on the New South Wales Railways. He began as an engineer draftsman in 1910, at
the age of 22.
President of the Australian Railway Historical Society for its first twenty years, C. C. Singleton is now the Society’s Honorary Research Oflicer. He supplied information on railways and tramways for the Australian Encyclopaedia and edited the book A Century of Locomotives published by the N.S.W. Railways. He is known to railwaymen as “Sing”.
DAVID BURKE, a Sydney journalist, is a member of theAustralian Railway Historical Society. He once worked on the steam and electric locomotives of the Victorian Rail
ways, and is the writer of many newspaper articles about trains.
