BMW has grown into a dynamic force within the international automobile industry. It has pioneered many new technologies in its vast product range that have been taken up by rival manufacturers and it has been amazingly successful in many forks of motor sport including Formula One. Along the way it has become the custodian of two iconic British marques—MINI and Rolls-Royce both of which have become hugely successful under BMW's careful ownership.
However, it was not always like this. There was a time at the end of 1959 when it was touch-and-go as to whether BMW would survive as an independent company. The company's facilities very nearly became places where Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles would have been built. Unthinkable today!
Not only does BMW design and build excellent sedans and wagons and Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) that set new standards for driving dynamics but it also builds some of the world's best coupes. And in the past it has built some of the most collectable coupes, coupes that are coveted by their owners and enthusiasts around the world. BMW is an active supporter of the prestigious Ville d'Este Concurs event held each year on the shores of beautiful Lake Como in the north of Italy and graces the event with beautiful examples of its rich past.
This book is about three of BMW's large coupes, two of which are collectable classics and the third (the current 6 Series) will undoubtedly become one in the years to come. All three display the dynamics of the company in their styling and sublime on-the-road performance; this aspect is especially prominent in the M636CSi and the 850CSi and the B12 5.7 version of the 8 Series from Alpina. These large coupes from BMW really do combine legendary performance with elegant styling.
Book Review by Jackie Jouret, Editor, Bimmer magazine
“If you’re a fan of two-door BMWs, or even if you’re merely curious about the evolution of German automobiles, Gavin Farmer’s BMW CoupÉs is a must-read. Farmer seems to have talked to just about every living designer or engineer to have been involved with the creation of these cars, and he describes in detail how each of BMW’s Coupes came to be. Delving into the subject with characteristic thoroughness, Farmer rewards the reader with the kind of rich detail that’s all too often omitted from automotive histories. Good stuff!”
