ABOUT
With special thanks to Bob Mills, Editor of Implement & Tractor: Reflections on 100 Years of Farm Equipment, for his research and technical assistance and Terry Distin, Pre-Production Manager, for his efforts toward the completion of this book.
Journey back with us through the development of the farm tractor with the I&T Collector's Series - Farm Tractors, 1926-1956. Covering the golden years of farm tractor evolution, this historical collection of tractors details virtually all models introduced during the 30 years between 1926 and 1956.
Hundreds of drawings and photos, early advertisements and detailed specifications are included to provide a comprehensive source of tractor information. Each chapter covers one year and often contains a summary of events and specific manufacturer information significant to that year. The book also includes an alphabetical listing of early advertisements and an index by manufacturer and model.
The material for this book is derived from The Cooperative Tractor Catalog and the Red Tractor Book, annual directories of the Implement & Hardware Trade Journal and Implement & Tractor-early and later names of the leading trade magazine for the farm equipment industry. The first chapter in this book contains information on all tractors available for sale during 1926. The succeeding chapters contain only models introduced during that specific year.

A Journey Back in Time
The development of the farm tractor owes much of its early impetus to the success of the automobile, which was not built with the farmer in mind. But rural America quickly saw and appreciated the benefits of the motor car in running errands, causing the popularity of mechanized vehicles and equipment in rural areas to boom.
Farmers for more than two generations had been familiar with and dependent on increasingly complex farm machinery. Cyrus McCormick's reaper, which appeared in the 1830's, is often cited as the first great step in agricultural mechanization. The grain binder in the 1870's was much more complex and readily accepted.
The first threshing machines appeared about 1840. Threshing was considered the province of a specialist and became more so after the appearance of the steam traction engine around 1870. Although the average farmer left the running of the threshing rig to the specialist, he worked the harvest, trusted it and developed a familiarity with the work and the machines.
In the earlier years, there was a wide diversity in farm tractor design. Most of the manufacturers were small enterprises. By 1926, designs had stabilized along the lines most accepted by the farmer, but diversity still existed. Within this diversity lies the essence of this historical collection of tractors.
